Serving Virginia Beach & Chesapeake patients
Freedom to be you
Many women often feel alone when it comes to discussing sensitive topics about the function and appearance of the vagina. However, female genitalia comes in all different shapes and sizes. The main goal of a labiaplasty is to reduce the size and shape of the vaginal lips or labia minora (the inner lips) in comparison to the labia majora (outer lips). Our board-certified plastic surgeons specialize in labiaplasty and other cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries. At North Beach Plastic Surgery, we want to give women back their self-confidence and know there is a solution. To learn more about our Virginia Beach labiaplasty, schedule your consultation today.
A labiaplasty offers women a surgical procedure to address functional and cosmetic concerns about their labia. However, for many women, this surgery goes beyond cosmetic. For example, excess tissue (labial hypertrophy) causes the labia minora to project lower than the outer lips of the vagina and cause physical discomfort during everyday activities and pain during sex. Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess tissue from the labia minora and reduces it in size to where it is comfortable to exercise, have sexual intercourse, or just take a walk without having friction and pain.
Your outpatient labiaplasty is expected to take one to two hours. There are over a dozen variations to labiaplasty, but the two main techniques include the trim and wedge method.
Trim method - The labiaplasty trim method or curvilinear technique has your surgeon making one long continuous incision along the edge of your labia minora to remove excess tissue evenly. This technique is often described as someone ‘trimming the hedges’ in an even and orderly fashion.
Wedge method - During this procedure, your surgeon removes a V-shaped wedge of tissue from the center of each labia minora. The remaining tissue is then stitched together with short incisions across the width of your labia.
After removing the excess tissue, your surgeon uses dissolvable stitches to close the incisions.
Depending on the labiaplasty approach, your recovery is expected to last up to seven days. You can expect swelling, bruising, and occasional bleeding. Any pain or discomfort is managed with over-the-counter medication, but your surgeon will provide anti-inflammatories and other pain medication if needed. You will receive specific post-operative instructions on how to keep yourself clean for optimal healing. It is vital to get rest and allow your body to heal properly. Urinating may be mildly uncomfortable, but taking a Sitz bath in warm water can help to alleviate some discomfort. Your sutures will dissolve within two to three weeks.
You can expect final results once all swelling subsides within two to three months. Many women say they see continued improvement over the course of the year. It takes five to six weeks to fully heal and look normal. Your results are permanent, but keep in mind your body and skin continue to age. Some women who have a baby after their labiaplasty found that it stretched their labial tissues or that the appearance of their labia changed.
Your choice is personal, and our doctors want you to feel comfortable discussing your most intimate feelings about your labia concerns. Your private consultation will enable you to get to know your surgeon and for you to discuss your ideal aesthetic. It is time to feel like you again. You may experience temporary numbness after your surgery, which is expected. However, it may take several weeks for the feeling to return.
Labiaplasty is a safe and effective procedure; however, some risks or complications include nerve damage, labial deformities, scar tissue, and infections. Therefore, it is crucial to have your labiaplasty performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon like our doctors at North Beach Plastic Surgery.
Every surgery is personalized for each patient; therefore, costs vary depending on their treatment plan. During your consultation, your surgeon will assess your concerns and determine the cost of your procedure.
